Resolutions to help ring in the new year make themselves felt once again, with a plethora of body-focused books debuting on this week's January Magazine online bestseller list. Do you care about your glycemic index? A whole lot of people -- including those who wrote The New Glucose Revolution -- think you should. The book immodestly describes the glycemic index as "the most significant dietary finding of the last 25 years." Heady enough words, it would seem, to send this book spinning towards the place that might make it this decade's Diet For a New America. And if you are interested in the whole glycemic index thing, The Good Carb Cookbook by Sandra Woodruff -- debuting in 14th position on this week's January list -- will finish off the thought by offering GI-friendly recipes. Where do you think Suzanne Somers will be 20 years from now? It's a good question. January sources tell us that Ms. Somers was born on October 16, 1946. Do the math: her 60th birthday is drawing alarmingly near. So what business does she have cavorting on the cover of her latest book -- Suzanne Somers' Fast and Easy -- looking as heartbreakingly spectacular as she did a couple of decades ago? One thing: that "Sommersized" body and those amazing tresses aren't doing anything to hurt the sales of Fast and Easy, yet another Sommerlicious cookbook. Sarah Stacey and J. Fairley's 21st Century Beauty Bible is the ultimate answer book. If you've ever wondered about the wisdom of purchasing a jar of tan in a can or felt baffled by the benefits claimed on various packages of mascara, this is the book for you. Thousands of beauty products have been tested by hundreds of women. The results are overwhelming and deeply interesting. Readers whose financial health is as important to them as their physical health are snapping up copies of Morningstar's Guide to Mutual Funds, debuting in 13th place on the January bestseller list. David Frum is the speechwriter credited with coining the phrase "axis of evil." That being the case, don't expect The Right Man to be an unbiased account of a tumultuous year in the life of an American president. But perhaps it's not meant to be: Frum is a player here. flying aboard Air Force One with President Bush, studying him at public events and private meetings. The late December launch of the film version of Michael Cunningham's Pen/Faulkner Award-winning novel, The Hours, has pushed this very popular book back into the spotlight. It didn't take a lot of mental exercise to figure that a film starring three of today's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman -- would gather at least its share of headlines. The fact that it's a wonderful book doesn't hurt, either. Look for this one to stick around at least until Oscar time.
