Though the publishing world had more than its share of news last week, the announcement that the fifth book in J.K. Rowling's mega-selling series about a young wizard would be published on the first day of summer, 2003 overshadowed just about everything else. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be available on June 21st. Word on the street is that a Saturday was chosen so that young book buyers standing in line to buy an early copy won't be tempted to miss school and won't lose out on sleep should -- as anticipated -- lines begin forming the night before. In the online world, the announcement has already created a book-buying frenzy, with advance orders putting the book in the number one position in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and, as a result, safely in the #1 position on this weeks' January Magazine online bestseller list. The UK adult edition of the book shows up at #10 on the January list. For those with nasty minds, the only difference between the adult and non-adult editions is the cover: the adult cover is designed so that grown-up readers can have it with them in public without feeling silly.

Though the idea doesn't seem startlingly revolutionary, the precepts seem incredibly sound. The authors of Change One don't expect dieters to radically alter what they eat. Rather, they recommend eating less of everything and changing one thing in their diet every week.

More than anything, the iconography of More Than A Pink Cadillac is the only thing that makes this a different type of business book: the material here does not. Author Jim Underwood brings his experience as an author and professor of business to this look at cosmetic maven Mary Kay Ash and the friendly pink empire she has created.

The film version of Michael Cunningham's brilliant and award-winning novel, The Hours, has not only created renewed interest in Cunningham's book, but also in Mrs. Dalloway, the Virginia Woolf novel that features so prominently in the movie and in Cunningham's novel. The books are two and nine, respectively, on this weeks' January Magazine online bestseller list.
