An assignment to cover a Las Vegas poker tournament for Harper's gave James McManus more than he bargained for. This ultimately included a book that has been attracting a lot of critical attention. Positively Fifth Street (check out the recent January excerpt) is one part memoir, one part true crime and one part well-wrought travel. It debuts on the January bestseller list in 6th position.

Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria's second book could not have been published at a time when readers would have been paying closer attention. In his second book, The Future of Freedom, Zakaria argues that democracy is not good just by being democracy and that the spread of democracy can actually threaten freedom. Whether or not readers are agreeing with Zakaria, they're buying the book, pushing The Future of Freedom into the #7 spot on the January Magazine bestseller list.

A wonderful book captures the imagination on all levels. That's as true for books for children as it is for literature aimed at adults. J.K. Rowling's books aren't wonderful because they're about wizards and magic: they endure because she touches her readers -- of all ages -- with the complete worlds she creates. The same can be said for Louis Sachar's Holes, a young adult book that is not about wizards and magic, but that we predict you'll be hearing lots more about in the coming months, starting with the #9 position on this week's January list.

Sophie Kinsella, the queen of the shopaholics, is back with Emma and a new adventure: Can You Keep A Secret. If you've missed this fresh British voice and are wondering if you'd like Kinsella's fiction, here's a comparison: if you loved Bridget Jones there's a pretty good chance you'll enjoy this author's shopaholic novels.
