In the week after the anniversary, it's not surprising to see the January bestseller list dominated by life changing or affirming non-fiction, interspersed with fiction by well loved authors. It all seems to indicate that the reading we're doing right now is important to us: to our souls, our hearts and our mental health.

Michel Faber's Dickensian epic, The Crimson Petal and the White, debuts in the #9 spot on the January list this week. Richly researched, brilliantly imagined and heavily promoted, we predict this will be one of the monster books of the fall season.

If you've missed encountering the first lady of edible sensuality, Nigella Lawson, you're missing out. Lawson brings her catlike sensibilities to the kitchen, where she manages to make everything she touches look not only doable, but irresistible. Her earlier books Nigella Bites and How to be a Domestic Goddess have been huge hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Her latest entry, Forever Summer, is thus far only available in the U.K., but look out world: it can only be a matter of time. And this lady makes the Naked Chef look fully clothed.

A foreign policy professor at Johns Hopkins University and a columnist at Newsday, when Michael Mandelbaum talks, we'd be well served to listen. From the placement that The Ideas That Conquered the World is getting on many bestseller lists, it looks very much like we are. Mandelbaum tells us lucidly about his vision for this new century. To our credit, we're listening. In droves.

In Nights In Rodanthe, Nicholas Sparks' (A Walk to Remember, The Rescue) new novel, the author brings us the story of two people with shattered lives who find solace in each other at mid-life. Sparks fans won't find much that's new here, but maybe that's the point?
