Mega-selling author Pat Conroy is best known for blockbuster novels that tug at the heart. Beach Music, The Prince of Tides and a very long list of others have instructed us that this name goes with big fiction. All of this makes My Losing Season all the more of a surprise. This is Conroy's first work of book-length non-fiction since The Water Is Wide in 1972. As the title suggests, Conroy's latest book is about his losing season: as a point guard playing college basketball. A season that, Conroy writes, has left reverberations throughout his life. What's the difference between this White Oleander and the version Oprah picked for her book club back in 1999? Just one thing: this time the cover of Janet Fitch's bestseller is graced by some serious Hollywood royalty including Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright Penn and Renée Zellweger. The movie opened last weekend, pushing Fitch's torrid tale back onto the bestseller lists. In his latest thriller, Michael Connelly (Blood Work, City of Bones) sends high tech entrepreneur Henry Pierce down a rabbit hole. Once again, Connelly's well-loved hero Harry Bosch is nowhere in sight and Pierce has to find his own way through the myriad boobytraps in Chasing the Dime. Does James Patterson ever sleep? An ever-lengthening string of bestsellers suggests not. In Four Blind Mice readers get reacquainted with Alex Cross (Along Came A Spider, Violets Are Blue). This time Alex postpones his retirement to help the friend-of-a-friend whose murder rap could lead to execution.
