The holidays skew all of the lists. At this time of year, people tend to be buying gift books, not just reading material for themselves and the January bestseller list reflects this. Skewed results or not, booksellers aren't complaining: 'Tis the time for moving the merchandise and many booksellers do a substantial percentage of their annual sales in this period. With that in mind, it's not surprising that the January list currently shows a higher than average number of novels and books with a seasonal theme. The Night Before Christmas, a seasonal favorite for generations now, turns up with a new pop-up treatment by artist/illustrator Robert Sabuda. It's the tale almost all of us remember, with the addition of Sabuda's special touch. There is no Christmas connection in Life On Air, David Attenborough's autobiography. Sir David is Britain's best known maker of natural history films and his voice will be recognizable to almost anyone who has ever watched a nature program. The first edition of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations was published in 1855 so it's unsurprising that the infrequent subsequent editions are worthy of note. The 17th edition includes quotes from Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Tony Kushner, Margaret Atwood, Mary Oliver, Maya Angelou, Martin Amis, Kingsley Amis, Jacques Cousteau, Rudolph Giuliani, Alfred Hitchcock, L. M. Montgomery, Eric Ambler, Jerry Seinfeld, J. K. Rowling, Katharine Graham and others. The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1941-1945 by noted historian Michael R. Beschloss will prove to be a big Dad book this holiday. While there's nothing really new here, Beschloss serves it all up interestingly. Sopranos anyone? As if it's not enough that The Sopranos Family Cookbook is in the number one spot this week, A Goomba's Guide to Life -- by the actor who plays Bobby Bacala on The Sopranos -- debuts in 17th position on the January list. 'Tis the season for kinder, gentler thriller writers. Not to be outdone by John Grisham (whose 2001 novel Skipping Christmas makes another appearance on the January list this year), David Baldacci (Last Man Standing, The Winner) gives us a seasonal tale involving a couple of journalists, a train and a holiday.
